Burnden Park

4mm scale private layout

Burnden Park is a private layout and although fictitious, is set in the Bolton area. Most of the buildings could be found in the area in the 1960’s and have been chosen by the owner as ones he remembers for various reasons. A few freelance buildings have been made to fit spaces in some areas. The main terminus station building has been modelled on Great Moor Street station with alterations to fit the layout

The stock is mainly passenger trains, but goods traffic is increasing. The town area has some large structures, mostly in low-relief, making a busy town scene in front of the station. Window displays have been added to some of the shops.

I have made all the buildings, roads and scenery as well as laying most of the track and adding new baseboards. A branch line starts at the main station and winds through open countryside to a small branch station.

The layout has been featured in British Railway Modelling magazine in the August 2007 issue. This was before the town scene was finished.

Although started as a conventionally wired layout, it has now been converted to DCC, which improves the sequences, especially around the engine shed area.

Burnden Park is now undergoing an exciting extensive re-modelling, due to a house move. The layout has been dismantled and all buildings boxed up. A new larger room is now finished and good progress has been made with new baseboards, trackwork and buildings. The track plan at the terminus has been enlarged for better engine shed, parcels  and goods movements and a new junction station and branch line will be incorporated, giving better operation. New track and pointwork is being constructed throughout. There will be many more buildings on the layout and for the first time, proper working signals will be used, operated from a brand new panel.
